He studied Homeopathy in Germany, Chiropractic in the United States, and Medicine in Russia. While in Russia he studied at both St. Petersburg Pediatric Medical Institute (now Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical Academy) and at the Pavlov First Medical Institute (also known as Saint Petersburg State Medical University). In more recent years Dr. Howard has turned much of his time and efforts to research in hope of discovering the key to enhancing proper immune system function. Because of his unique background and expertise, Dr. Howard is requested to lecture throughout the world. Today, we are able to benefit from his research through the development of Balance of Nature supplements.

Early Life and Education

The early years
Douglas Howard was born on December 4, 1960. He grew up in a small farming community where they raised mostly potatoes, alfalfa, and grain. He was the son of a fireman and family business owner. In a small town environment of hard work and good fun, Dr. Howard learned the value of a day’s work at an early age. He has always had a keen interest in people, science, and anatomy. Being a physician was always his dream. As a teenager he excelled in his studies to the point of having special classes and privileges created for him. From the early age of 14, his after school hours were consumed with volunteering, working, and managing hospital Emergency Rooms. These early experiences planted a seed for a life long journey.

University, Germany Mission, Marriage, and Children
Howard began his college education at Dixie College and completed a year of pre-med before leaving for Northern Germany in April of 1980, where he served as a full time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He spent his time serving the people and teaching the principles of his faith to those who were interested. Howard developed a lifelong affection for Germany and has remained fluent in German. Shortly after he returned home, Howard married his childhood sweetheart, Susan Jackson. In the following years they had five children together and Howard earned his Doctorate of Chiropractic from Cleveland Chiropractic College.

Work and Research

Chiropractic Physician
Dr. Howard practiced as a Chiropractic physician in Salt Lake City, Utah where he also served on the board of chiropractic examiners.

Pavlov First Medical Institute
After practicing in Salt Lake City for 5 years, Dr. Howard was invited to study medicine at Pavlov First Medical Institute in Saint Petersburg, Russia. While studying at Pavlov, he served as the Dean of Foreign Student Affairs. Dr. Howard, his wife, and their 5 children lived in Saint Petersburg, Russia for almost 2 years while he completed his studies.

Holistic and Pharmacological Medicine
While working in Russia, Dr. Howard was privileged to work with some wonderful scientists and Doctors. Here he was exposed to a new atmosphere of healing; an atmosphere where various therapies were combined for the best interest of the patient. Holistic therapies such as Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Herbal, and Homeopathic were combined with pharmacological and surgical approaches when deemed necessary. He witnessed the advantages of each discipline and realized they are all valid when appropriately applied.

It was while in Russia that Dr. Howard’s thoughts began to turn more and more toward nutrition. It was the first time in his life he had actually witnessed the effect of socioeconomic diseases (diseases caused by social and or economic status, not just germ theory). The Iron Curtain had only recently fallen and most of the people of Russia were very poor at the time. Many were living on black bread and water. It became very clear to Dr. Howard that those who could afford to buy or raise fruits and vegetables were healthy and those who could not, were sick. The line was distinctive.

Development of Fruits and Veggies®

Upon Dr. Howard’s return from Russia, his interest in nutrition had peaked. At first he joined the movement in search of that one mysterious, magical phytochemical. The one that would cure all that ails you. That was a roller coaster ride because more and more were being discovered each day. It was a time when research on phytochemicals was just beginning and super fruits and super pills were jumping at you from all sides. Finally, Dr. Howard realized the insanity. There are 100’s of thousands of phytochemicals, some discovered and others yet to be discovered. This realization, coupled with his experience in Russia brought him to the epiphany that all of the “super” chemicals were being extracted from fruits and vegetables. Through eating enough fruits and vegetables, people would keep their bodies in balance while getting all of the phytochemicals in the proper ratio. In 1997, after coming to this understanding, Dr. Howard developed Balance of Nature Fruits and Veggies®. The supplement replaces multivitamins and consists 100% of flash dried fruits and vegetables. Fruits and Veggies® make it possible for people to consume the nutritional equivalent of more than 10 servings of 31 different fruits and vegetables every day. The results are impressive.
